BIO

Normandy-born and based, ex- Brightonian, Bristolian & Brusseleer Yann Tambour began recording in 2000 under electronica moniker Encre. He then returned to his beloved classical guitar and started to experiment with the kora, a West-African harp on which he developed his own playing technique, and of which he designed and built his own personal versions. Instrument making and a singular approach to the singer-songwriter mode are at the root of Stranded Horse, which started off as a one-man outfit. Yann released two solo albums in 2007 (Blanktapes/Talitres) and 2011 (Talitres) on which he explored Anglo-Saxon finger picking folk and French songwriting. Yann also collaborated with kora master Ballaké Sissoko with whom he released a 12” in 2008 on Talitres.

He later met Ballaké‘s gifted student Boubacar Cissokho in Dakar in 2012, with whom he recorded a 7″ (2012) and an LP, Luxe (2016), in both France & Senegal along with 9 other musicians. Stranded Horse’s last album to date is called Grand Rodeo (2021) and explores their usual Mandingue Franco-Brit finger-picking folk – combined, this time, with Afro-Caribbean biguines, polyrhythms & heady trance with the help of percussionist Sebastien Forrester & singer, keyboardist & violinist Miguel Bahamondès-Rojas.

Since 2007 Tambour has toured the globe extensively (Europe, Asia, Russia, North-America, Africa), both alone and accompanied, drawing inspiration from his various collaborations and travels. The singularity of his music has been praised by the music press both at home and abroad throughout his 22 year-old career.
